Palo Verde is getting healthier, and its results are getting better.
The Panthers won their second straight Friday night by shutting out Durango 47-0.
“We’re finally getting a little bit of consistency,” Palo Verde coach Joe Aznarez said. “Peaking at the right time is what we’re working towards.”
The victory, which improved Palo Verde to 3-4 overall and 2-0 in Southwest league play, was a typical Panthers’ performance. They bludgeoned the Trailblazers on the ground as five different running backs — Chris Bell, Thaddeus Wiley, Max Miller-Hooks, Aaron Chisolm and Earnest Williams — scored touchdowns.
Dylan Turner had the other score when he returned a fumble for a touchdown.
“It was a slow burn,” Aznarez said. “There were no real big plays — just a little here, a little there. We controlled the line on both sides, and that was a big thing for us.”
Durango fell to 0-8 overall, 0-3 in league but will compete for a playoff berth against Shadow Ridge next week. Palo Verde meets Legacy next for the right to a home playoff game.
“Our kids know what’s at stake so they’ll be focused and ready,” Aznarez said.
