There aren’t many teams who qualify for the playoffs with just one victory.

But the Shadow Ridge High football team did just that tonight, beating Durango 48-15 to improve to 1-7 overall and earn a spot in the Sunset Regional playoffs in two weeks.

Four of the five teams in Shadow Ridge’s Southwest League make the playoffs, meaning one win is all it takes.

You won’t hear first-year coach Travis Foster complaining about an extra week to the season. His team consists of some underclassmen in key positions, meaning another week this season will be beneficial in preparing for the next.

“It’s huge for us to get another week. The kids are excited,” Foster said.

Dominick Wilson had 162 rushing yards and two touchdowns, and freshman quarterback Kody Presser passed for 110 yards and a touchdown to sophomore Aubrey Nellems. Presser also had a rushing touchdown.

Defensively, Amaru Mitchell had an interception.

Now that Shadow Ridge is in the playoffs, the Mustangs can play for a higher seed. Next week, they play Legacy, and the winner will be the league’s No. 3 seed for the playoffs.

“We haven’t been losing to the Little Sisters of the Poor,” Foster said. “Our schedule had 7 of the top 12 teams in the state. I don’t think anyone else can say that.”
