When Canyon Springs placekicker Cesar Rodriguez lined up for his only kick Friday night, he likely had no idea of its implications.

Rodriguez sent the ball sailing through the uprights to put the Pioneers up 7-0 over Cheyenne in overtime.

Cheyenne went on to score on its drive as well, but a failed two-point conversion turned Rodriguez’s kick into a game winner. Canyon Springs won 7-6.

In a game that saw no points in regulation, the Pioneers scored their only touchdown of the game when senior Jerrod Blackwell Jr. caught a pass on an out route and turned it upfield for the score in overtime.

“A lot of people don’t know, but in my offense, 10 out of the 11 guys are different faces this year,” said Canyon Springs coach Keith Jones. “But I knew our defense would be great, and they were tonight.”
