Green Valley produced dual 100-yard rushers Friday night in a 38-34 victory over Las Vegas High.

Senior Austin Warhop and junior Nazhi Salih each crossed the century mark and combined for three touchdowns on the ground.

“We were efficient in the pass game, too, but we really did a good job controlling the ball,” Green Valley coach Brian Castro said. “Running the ball certainly helps so you don’t feel like you have to pass as much.”

The Gators never trailed, but that doesn’t mean the game was without suspense. The Wildcats erased large leads on multiple occasions, including an early 14-0 hole.

Scores off of turnovers allowed Las Vegas High to knot the score at 21 going into halftime. Green Valley ignited again, scoring 17 unanswered points out of halftime.

But Las Vegas roared back, forcing Green Valley to hold on for the narrow victory.

“We’ve got to learn to finish,” Castro said. “We had leads then had some breakdowns, both offensively and defensively.”
