UNLV football adds two more JC signees

UNLV football added two more junior college players to its 2017 class on Monday, head coach Tony Sanchez announced.

Defensive back Demitrious Gibbs (Southwestern College in San Diego) and defensive end Roger Mann (Palomar College in San Marcos, Calif.) both signed national letters of intent with UNLV.

The two joined center Sid Acosta (Riverside, Calif., City College) and linebacker Jacob Rominger (Highland Community College in Kansas) who signed with the Rebels last week.

“Demitrious (Gibbs) is a long, athletic guy who will add much-needed depth to a young group back there,” Sanchez said in a release. “He can play multiple positions in the secondary.”

At 6-foot-4, Gibbs will bring some much-needed height to a Rebel secondary that was extremely vulnerable to the deep ball in 2016. The Rebels ranked 83rd in the country with 243 passing yards allowed per game.

Another area the Rebels struggled was pressuring opposing quarterbacks. UNLV ranked 100th in the nation with only 19 sacks all season.

Mann could improve that aspect right away.

“Roger (Mann) is a big, strong guy with good hands who we think can develop into a dynamic pass-rusher on this level,” Sanchez said.

All four junior college recruits will enroll at UNLV on Jan. 1 and will participate in spring practices on campus starting March 1.

The rest of Sanchez’s 2017 recruiting class will be announced on national signing day Feb. 1.
