Carson comic insults surgeon

The Mike Smith editorial cartoon Dec. 6 depicting Dr. Ben Carson as an inexperienced buffoon who does not know the difference between a federal-level Cabinet position such as secretary the Department of Housing and Urban Development, which he has been nominated for, and a cabinet is an insult, sends out a false narrative and description of the man, and was not funny.

Carson is a Yale graduate, completed his medical education at Michigan Medical School and was the director of pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins from 1984 to 2013. He has received more than 60 honorary doctorate degrees and has written more than 100 neurosurgical publications. In 2008, he received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian award in the United States. He has served on numerous corporate boards and brings to the government a broad background that qualifies him for a Cabinet position.

Carson’s background and experience is equal to, if not more than, the limited experience that President Barack Obama had when he took office. I haven’t seen Smith insult the other nominees as he appears to have done with Carson. His portrayal of Carson is demeaning. Mr. Smith, you owe Carson an apology for your depiction of a great man.
