Grant paying to test drinking water at Nevada schools

CARSON CITY — The state Division of Environmental Protection has started testing the drinking water in 408 public schools to check for lead levels.

The division received a federal grant of nearly $90,000 to conduct the tests.

Division Administrator Jennifer Carr said old plumbing fixtures could potentially contribute to lead and copper in the water.

The testing will be conducted in schools with kindergarten and prekindergarten students.

The division conducted the first test at a school in Lyon County, and the samples tested below allowable lead levels, officials said.
