UNLV’s Carter lost for season with ACL tear

UNLV Defeats Air Force Academy

UNLV forward Ben Carter (13) gives “high fives” to fans lined up the congratulate him after defeating Air Force 100-64 in their game at the Thomas & Mack Center on Saturday, January 16, 2016.

Ben Carter, who had arguably been the UNLV basketball team’s best player, will miss the remainder of the season with a torn ACL, the university announced today.

The 6 foot 9 forward went down midway through the first half Saturday against San Diego State, pounding the floor multiple times in clear pain before being carried off the court. Today, the worst was confirmed in a MRI.

Carter averaged 8.6 points and was second on the team wit six rebounds per game. More important, though, was the leadership he brought to a young UNLV team.

“We are very disappointed for Ben,” interim coach Todd Simon said in a statement. “He was obviously an impact player for us, but more than that he is a pillar of our program with his toughness, spirit and leadership. It is a huge loss for our team.”

UNLV plays at New Mexico Tuesday.
