Coroner IDs woman hit, killed by RTC bus

A woman killed Saturday when she was hit by a bus that veered off the road has been identified by the Clark County Coroner’s Office as 39-year-old Jooyoung Do.

Do, whose city of residence was not immediately available, was on the sidewalk along Tropicana Avenue east of Polaris Avenue about 5 a.m. when the eastbound bus left the road, according to Metro Police.

The Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada bus crashed into a bus shelter before striking Do, who was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. The 22-year-old driver, Jamal Nichols, was uninjured, according to police.

Nine passengers were on the bus, and all of them walked away without serious injuries, Keolis Transit America spokesman Bill Marion said. Keolis is one of two contractors operating the bus system for the RTC.

Keolis hires drivers and mechanics, maintains buses and trains drivers for RTC-owned buses in the southern valley, Marion said.

“We are cooperating fully with Metro in providing them with all of the information they need and request,” he said.

Nichols has been placed on administrative leave, Marion said. He did not disclose whether the leave is paid.

The reason the bus veered off the road is still under investigation, police said. Metro will forward the findings of its investigation to the Clark County District Attorney’s Office for review, Officer Laura Meltzer said.

The RTC posted a statement Saturday to Facebook calling the crash a terrible tragedy and offering condolences to Do’s family.
