Lieutenant governor drops educating savings account suit

After a court ruling that stayed Nevada’s education savings account, Lt. Gov. Mark Hutchison has dropped a lawsuit regarding the program that put him at odds with Attorney General Adam Laxalt and Treasurer Dan Schwartz.

In a joint statement, Laxalt and Hutchison said, “Earlier today, the parties submitted a joint stipulation to stay litigation in the Norman v. Schwartz case, effectively suspending the case indefinitely. In light of Judge Wilson’s decision in Lopez v. Schwartz, we have set aside our strategic differences, and are united behind the position that the best legal course of action now is to stay the Norman case and support the Attorney General’s efforts in defense of this critical program in the Lopez matter.”

In a highly unusual move, Hutchison independently filed suit Dec. 22 as a private attorney in support of Nevada’s recently passed school voucher program, leading to a public spat among the three Republicans. In response, Laxalt made a motion to dismiss Hutchison’s suit. Schwartz had called on Hutchison to drop the suit or resign.
