Red Cross invites locals to spread fire-prevention message

Valley residents looking to make a difference in their community will have a chance Monday as the American Red Cross of Southern Nevada and volunteers spread the word about fire prevention.

The organization is inviting members of the community to help install smoke detectors and distribute fire-safety information during the event, according to a news release.

It takes place on the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service, which occurs annually on the federal holiday marking the observance of King's Jan. 15 birthday.

Volunteers will offer to install smoke detectors at homes in the Maycliff Mobile Home Park at 3601 E. Wyoming Ave., Desert Inn Estates at 5280 Muir Woods Parkway, Kings Row RV and Mobile Park at 3660 Boulder Highway, and Storeyville Mobile Home Resort at 3755 N. Nellis Blvd., the release said.

“We want to honor Dr. King’s legacy by serving the community we live in,” Red Cross Regional CEO Scott Emerson said in the release. “Our goal is to make Southern Nevada a better, safer place to live. Smoke detectors save lives, and we want everyone to have an equal shot at escaping a home fire alive.”

Those interested in volunteering can register at redcross.org/vegasfiresafety. A Red Cross official will provide further instructions of which of the neighborhoods to visit.
