A pedestrian was hit and killed by an SUV on Sunday near Sahara Avenue and Valley View Boulevard, according to Metro Police.

The female, who has not been identified, was hit by the eastbound SUV about 6:05 p.m. after she stepped into Sahara from the center median, police said.

She was taken to University Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead, police said. The 79-year-old man driving the SUV was not hurt, police said.

Francisco Estrada was manning the grill outside his food trailer when he heard a noise across the street. His wife, Veronica Caballero, was inside the trailer and heard the same noise over the loud Spanish music emanating from their small stereo.

Estrada said he saw a person being dragged under the SUV. He uttered “no way” in Spanish, and Caballero said she went outside to see what was going on. That’s when she saw a person in the street.

People stopped to help, she said.

One woman offered her jacket to keep the victim warm while another took the person’s pulse, Caballero said.

A woman positioned her car in the road to prevent anyone from running over the victim, she said.

Caballero said she’s seen six or seven serious accidents in the area in the four years the couple has operated the trailer.

“We really need a stop sign right there,” she said, pointing to the intersection.

Police closed eastbound Sahara at the intersection, and westbound traffic was restricted Sunday night.

This is the seventh traffic-related death reported in Metro’s jurisdiction this year. It remains under investigation.
