A pedestrian was hit by a semitractor-trailer and killed this morning on southbound Interstate 15 near Jean, according to the Nevada Highway Patrol.

Based on witnesses accounts, the man, who has not yet been identified, may have been in the freeway when he was hit, officials said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The right southbound lane was closed, but the left lane remained open, officials said.

Mike Nichols says he was driving back from Utah to Southern California when he saw a man pacing along the side of the concrete median on I-15.

Nichols thought it was odd that he was pacing in the middle of the freeway and passed him when he says the pedestrian took off running.

He said he watched as the man entered the path of the semi.

"I've never seen a violent death like that," he said. "He was so alive, and then he was just laying, not alive."

The collision remains under investigation.
