UFC 187 Fighters Weigh In at MGM

L.E. Baskow

UFC light heavyweight contender Daniel Cormier poses for the fans during the UFC 187 weigh in at the MGM Grand Ballroom on Friday, May 22, 2015.

The UFC introduced its annual International Fight Week concept four years ago, the intent being to build a bigger local event around its early-July pay-per-view fight card.

It has increased in scope every year, taking a particularly major leap this time around with next Saturday’s milestone UFC 200 as the anchor event. Two other fight cards support UFC 200 in addition to a calendar full of fan entertainment from Tuesday through Sunday. Here’s a by-the-numbers look at what to expect as the UFC takes over our town:

35 fights scheduled over three days

Action starts with a matchup of welterweight prospects Vicente Luque and Alvaro Herrera at UFC Fight Night 90 Thursday afternoon at MGM Grand Garden Arena. It concludes with a light heavyweight championship bout between Jon Jones and Daniel Cormier in the main event of UFC 200 late Saturday night at T-Mobile Arena. Fight schedule: Thursday, July 7 — UFC Fight Night 90, 3 p.m., MGM Grand Garden Arena, tickets $40-$205; Friday, July 8 — "The Ultimate Fighter" 23 finale, 3 p.m., MGM Grand Garden Arena, tickets $40-$205; Saturday, July 9 — UFC 200, 3:30 p.m., T-Mobile Arena, tickets $205-$12,000. Tickets available through Ticketmaster

600,000

Square feet of “all things UFC” at the Las Vegas Convention Center Friday through Sunday as part of the UFC Fan Expo. The event includes autograph signings, amateur tournaments, Q&A sessions and sponsor booths.

Former champions competing at UFC 200 in addition to current belt-holders Cormier, Jones and Miesha Tate, who defends her women’s bantamweight title against Amanda Nunes on pay-per-view. Two of the former champions, Jose Aldo and Frankie Edgar, face off for the interim featherweight belt, which was created as a result of current champion Conor McGregor fighting two weight classes above at welterweight.

50/50

Chance of who wins between Aldo and Edgar, according to betting odds. It’s the toughest fight to call of the weekend, despite Aldo having previously beaten Edgar by unanimous decision at UFC 156 in February 2013.

Number of title fights: Dos Anjos vs. Alvarez, lightweight, UFC Fight Night 90; Tate vs. Nunes, bantamweight, UFC 200 main card; Aldo vs. Edgar, interim featherweight, UFC 200 main card; jedrzejczyk vs. Gadelha, strawweight, "The Ultimate Fighter” 23 finale; Cormier vs. Jones 2, light heavyweight, UFC 200 main card.

220,000

Peak number of YouTube viewers during a news conference featuring Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz before they fought at UFC 196 in March. A news conference for their rematch, scheduled for UFC 202 on Aug. 20 at T-Mobile Arena, goes down at 11:30 a.m. Thursday in perhaps the most anticipated non-fight event of the week.

363

Total fight cards in UFC history after UFC 200 concludes Saturday night. The name UFC 200 can be misleading, because the promotion only numbers its biggest events — usually those on pay-per-view — and not the increasing deluge of other cards on television and the UFC Fight Pass streaming service.

545

Estimated weight, in pounds, that will be in the octagon for the UFC 200 co-main event between Brock Lesnar and Mark Hunt, making it literally one of the biggest fights in UFC history. Both heavyweights typically weigh in at the 265-pound limit, but rehydrate the day before fighting.

1,653

Days since Brock Lesnar last fought, which ended in a TKO loss to Alistair Overeem at UFC 141 in December 2011. Signing the current WWE star for a one-off bout at UFC 200 was the surprise fight UFC President Dana White had alluded to ever since beginning to book the event.

$12,000

Price for an octagon-side ticket at UFC 200. That’s the highest face value on ticketmaster, though resale sites have similar seats available for more than $18,000.

$190 million

Economic impact produced by International Fight Week in 2014, according to a study by Applied Analysis last year. The average guest in town for the festivities stayed 4.2 nights and spent $2,922.

39-2

Combined record of Jones and Cormier, with one of the losses coming from the first time they fought each other. Jones defeated Cormier via unanimous decision at UFC 182 in January 2015. Jones’ only loss came via disqualification for illegal elbows in a fight he was on the verge of finishing against Matt Hamill in December 2009.
