U.S. Congressman Joe Heck (R-NV) responds to a question during an editorial board meeting at the Las Vegas Sun offices Monday, Aug. 11, 2014.

Republican Senate candidate Rep. Joe Heck fielded pointed questions on immigration during a meeting of the Las Vegas-based group Hispanics in Politics.

Activist A.J. Buhay attended the Wednesday meeting and identified himself as an Air Force veteran who got his citizenship because of his military service.

He asked Heck why he voted against funding for deportation relief programs created by President Barack Obama.

Heck said he'd always supported a pathway to citizenship for people brought to the country illegally through no fault of their own, but opposed reforming immigration through executive orders.

Heck said activists abandoned a pathway to citizenship proposal he crafted with them in 2013 because they were more concerned about keeping immigration a political issue.

Heck is in a competitive race with Democrat Catherine Cortez Masto.
