Home invasion followed fatal shooting near Nellis and Charleston, police say

Updated Friday, June 10, 2016 | 9:30 p.m.

A suspect is under arrest and Metro Police are looking for two masked men they shot and killed a man Friday afternoon in the east valley.

The man in police custody was arrested after the car he and the two alleged shooters were in lost control minutes after being spotted by officers, Metro Lt. Dan McGrath said.

Witnesses called 911 about the shooting about 2 p.m. at an apartment complex at 451 Nellis Blvd., near Stewart Avenue, McGrath said.

It appears like the victim, described as being in his 30s, had parked at the complex and exited a Ford Explorer when two masked men got out of a white Kia sedan, approached and shot him multiple times, McGrath said.

The victim, who died at University Medical Center about three hours later, might have been targeted and is not a criminal, McGrath said.

Investigators had not determined a motive as of Friday night, he said.

Responding officers, who were praised by McGrath, had heard the vehicle description over the radio spotted it speeding down Stewart. Police tried conducting a stop, but the driver did not comply.

The officers did not engage in a high-speed chase, he said. However, minutes later at 28th Street and Cedar Avenue, about 3 miles west of the shooting scene, the car spun out of control and at least one man was seen running away while carrying a gun.

The two suspected shooters were able to get away and the man arrested, the possible getaway driver described as being white, strong-armed a woman and took her phone. He also ran to an apartment complex and kicked in a door, McGrath said.

Officers arrested him after he jumped from a back window, he said.

He was taken to UMC for treatable injuries and was to be booked at the Clark County Detention Center on robbery and home invasion counts, McGrath said. He could potentially also face a murder charge.

The shooters were initially described as being black; one has dreadlocks and the other is heavy-set, McGrath said. They both wore dark clothes.

The investigation was still in its early stages about 8 p.m., he said.
