A man faces attempted murder and robbery counts after he allegedly tried to grab a shotgun from a Metro Police officer's vehicle, then drove away in the vehicle as the officer continued firing rounds at him.

Jamal Gwynn, 27, was arrested about a mile and a half away from the site of the shooting late Friday in the 1100 block of Buffalo Drive, Capt. James LaRochelle said.

A woman reported about 10:30 p.m. that a man had robbed her at gunpoint and taken her Chevrolet Malibu. Police spotted the empty car on a landscape median at an apartment complex, LaRochelle said. An officer saw Gwynn, who was armed.

A foot chase ensued, and Gwynn was able to reach for a shotgun on the patrol vehicle, LaRochelle said. That's when the officer fired multiple rounds.

Gwynn got into the marked vehicle and drove away as the officer fired more rounds, LaRochelle said.

A Metro air unit followed, and Gwynn stopped near Washington Avenue and Durango Drive, where he was arrested.

Gwynn, who suffered multiple non-life-threatening wounds, was taken to University Medical Center, then was booked into the Clark County Detention Center. He also faces counts of larceny and illegally being in possession of a weapon.
