Geoconda Arguello-Kline, left, secretary-treasurer for Culinary Workers Union, Local 226, and Nevada State Sen. Ruben Kihuen, a Democratic candidate for U.S. Congress, take part in a Culinary Union protest near Trump International Hotel on Friday, Aug. 21, 2015, in Las Vegas. Trump International Hotel workers are not unionized.

Democratic congressional candidate Ruben Kihuen is taking his campaign to Southern Nevada’s airwaves starting tomorrow with a 30-second ad spot highlighting both his personal story and major endorsements.

The ad heavily prominently features Sen. Minority Leader Harry Reid, who endorsed Kihuen in his bid for Nevada’s 4th Congressional District, and touts Kihuen’s union endorsements including the Culinary Union, Nevada’s largest and most politically powerful union representing hotel workers on the Strip and across Nevada.

“Ruben came from humble beginnings and became a progressive champion in the State Senate,” Reid says in the ad.

Kihuen’s mother, a housekeeper at the MGM Grand and a Culinary Union member, also makes a cameo in the ad with her son. “Mom worked here as a housekeeper so I could have a better life. I work every day to make her proud,” he says.

Kihuen is embroiled in what is largely considered a three-way Democratic primary in the district between him, former Assemblywoman Lucy Flores, and philanthropist Susie Lee. Kihuen is the first of the three candidates to hit the airwaves in Southern Nevada.

The initial ad buy is $66,000 for the second half of the week and will air on both broadcast and cable television, according to his campaign.
