Del Sol stopped eight Pahrump Valley plays from inside the 10-yard line with less than two minutes remaining to secure a 14-11 victory Friday night.
The final three plays came from the 1-yard line, where the Dragons semi-miraculously stuffed all of them.
“We held and they got in position to kick a field goal to go to overtime,” Del Sol coach Gary Maki described. “They had a bad snap and couldn’t capitalize.”
Del Sol was able to run the clock out from there. The victory was a relief to Maki, who couldn’t imagine defeat on a night where his defense showed so much resilience.
“Our defensive line is undersized but they really rose to the challenge,” Del Sol coach Gary Maki said. “They played really well.”
The offense wasn’t too shabby either. Senior receiver Thomas Spearman caught two touchdown passes from freshman quarterback Maaliq Flowers.
Maki said the Dragons’ 14 points were misleading because they had two touchdowns — one also by Spearman — called back as part of racking up 135 penalty yards.
But the defense forced five turnovers to help Del Sol score 14 straight points after falling into an early 3-0 deficit. And then the front seven led by Michael Hutchinson, Victor Cano and Darrion Jones stood firm with the game on the line.
