First attorney applies to fill Nevada Supreme Court vacancy

CARSON CITY — A 68-year-old attorney from the Gardnerville-Carson City area is there first person to apply to succeed retired Justice Nancy Saitta on the Nevada Supreme Court.

Michael King Powell has worked in private practice and with the Federal Public Defender’s Office. He was an assistant federal public defender from January 1999 to October 2011. He retired from federal service to go into private practice in Reno.

He graduated from law school at the University of San Diego in 1978.

Powell was the first name posted on the website of the state Commission on Judicial Selection, which has set Friday as the deadline to apply for the job.

Applicants must have at least 15 years experience in the practice of law, at least two of them in Nevada.

The commission will conduct interviews Oct. 17 and nominate three finalists. Gov. Brian Sandoval will make the final appointment.
