A fire in a recreational vehicle in Henderson killed an 81-year-old man Tuesday evening, according to city officials.

The man had escaped the burning RV in the 1800 block of Ward Drive, near Sunset Road and Boulder Highway, but collapsed while trying to extinguish the flames with a garden hose, officials said. He died at University Medical Center, where he was taken in critical condition.

Fire crews were called to the accidental blaze about 5:30 p.m. Bystanders told investigators the man collapsed as they ran to assist him and pull him from the RV, officials said.

Property damage was estimated at $10,000, officials said.
