Police: Woman arrested in boyfriend’s slaying after changing story

A woman faces a murder count in the death of her boyfriend after detectives noted inconsistencies in her account of the Saturday shooting, according to a Metro Police arrest report.

Lisa Hollopeter, 34, originally told investigators the gun she was holding went off when her boyfriend wrapped his hand around her trigger finger, the report said.

But police say Jose Ignacio Villanueva III, 40, of Las Vegas was on his knees in the couple’s bathroom when Hollopeter fired seven rounds, striking him four times, according to the report.

Officers were dispatched about 10:30 p.m. Saturday to the 100 block of Thunder Street after Hollopeter flagged down a passerby in the neighborhood and told her Villanueva had been shot, police said. His body was found on the bathroom floor with a gun nearby, police said.

Hollopeter originally said she and Villanueva were standing and facing each other when he wrapped his hand around her finger, which was on the trigger, and two rounds went off, according to police.

When pressed by detectives, Hollopeter said Villanueva was kneeling and that she might have shot him more than twice, police said. Villanueva was shot in both legs, the back and left shoulder, police said.

Hollopeter, who was booked at the Clark County Detention Center without bail, is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday, according to jail logs.
