Letter to the editor:

Unite against anti-Semitism

Though it grieves me to say it, anti-Semitism and hate crimes against Jews are on the rise in America and Nevada. Rep. Jacky Rosen, D-Nev., a past president of the Congregation Ner Tamid in Henderson, says she’s alarmed by the escalation of hate crimes.

These crimes include hundreds of gravestones being toppled and defaced in Jewish cemeteries, and swastika graffiti appearing on college campuses, synagogues and subways. Further, the Jewish Community Centers Association of North America has reported that 53 Jewish community centers have received bomb threats.

To her credit, Rep. Rosen has joined the Congressional Bipartisan Task Force for Combating Anti-Semitism. Rosen says, “Public and private citizens alike have to do their part to combat this rise in hate. There is no place in our communities for hate.”

I’m doing my part. I’ve written to Mayor Carolyn Goodman and our city council to take advantage of the Sister Cities federal program and establish a Sister Cities agreement between Las Vegas with Jerusalem or Tel Aviv, Israel.
