Senate OKs bill banning conversion therapy for minors

A proposed ban on conversion therapy for minors is moving to the Assembly after securing enough votes to pass in the full Senate.

A 15-5 vote passed Senate Bill 201 to the Assembly, the same chamber where a similar measure died in 2015.

The bill as amended seeks to ban certain health care professionals from giving minors conversion therapy related to sexual orientation or gender identity.

Sen. David Parks, D-Las Vegas, sponsored the bill and told a committee of lawmakers in March that conversion therapy serves only to make LGBTQ youth hate themselves.

“I want to thank my colleagues for their support in passing this bill to protect the mental and physical well-being of Nevada’s LGBT kids,” Parks said in a news release Tuesday. “Conversion therapy is not therapy at all. It’s a dangerous practice that puts LGBT youth at greater risk of anxiety, depression, substance abuse, and suicide."
