Letters to the Editor:

Training program deserves salute

Judging from the support and assistance National Guardsmen and veterans receive from the Silver State’s businesses and corporations, I’m confident Nevada is well on its way to attaining Gov. Brian Sandoval’s goal of making our state the most military- and veteran-friendly state in the union. As the general responsible for 1,100 airmen, I commend the organizations that are going above and beyond to assist veterans.

Recently, I addressed Nevada veterans and National Guardsmen at a free, innovative, one-week training course hosted by IBM and Corporate America Supports You and learned about some fantastic programs our business allies are providing for service members and veterans. Corporate America Supports You is a national nonprofit that helps vets find employment. The course aimed to ease the transition from military to civilian careers and enhance employment skills.

The training class was provided by IBM’s Veteran Employment Accelerator Grant initiative, part of IBM’s recently announced commitment to hire 2,000 veterans in the U.S. within four years.

At the end of the course, participants were eligible to take the certification exam to officially become data analysts. That occupation is an expanding career field with heavy industry demand in such areas as cybersecurity and data analysis.

Held at Asher College in Las Vegas, the training session added 12 National Guardsmen to the number of American, Canadian and British vets trained by the program since its inception last year. IBM expects more than 400 U.S. vets will complete the program this year.

IBM is set to host additional training classes in 2017. For information, visit http://www.casy.us/Training/i2TrainingCalendar.html.
