Family planning bill clears Nevada Senate committee

CARSON CITY — The Nevada Senate Finance Committee has approved creating a fund to provide family planning services, but it doesn’t allocate any state money for such services. The fund would be financed by grants and donations.

The vote was 4-3, with Democrats in the majority.

Senate Bill 122 would set up a fund to provide money to local governments and organizations to distribute contraceptive devices, refer people for health services and test for and treat sexually transmitted diseases. The fund would not provide money for abortions.

On the other side of the Legislature, the Assembly Ways and Means Committee heard testimony today in support of the state allocating $4 million for family planning services.

Elisa Cafferata, representing Planned Parenthood, said the money would not fund abortions.

The Assembly committee did not vote on the measure.
