Police: Shooting victim was wary of pot deal at vacant house

Moments before she was fatally shot in the face, a small-time pot dealer told a friend on the phone that something was odd about the seemingly vacant house she had just pulled up to last month, according to Metro Police arrest report.

Instead of meeting in a public place as planned, a buyer wanted to meet at the house in the 8500 block of Copper Knoll Avenue where he said he lived, the report said.

But when Alyssa Sayago, 19, arrived about 9:30 p.m. on March 13, she noticed the house was dark and had a lockbox on the door, according to the friend, who stayed on the phone during part of the transaction, according to the report.

A young man pulled up and convinced her to go to the backyard, where his mother was supposedly going to weigh the ounce of marijuana Sayago had agreed to sell, police said. Sayago’s friend told police Sayago had just started selling small amounts of marijuana, according to the report.

Against the friend’s advice, Sayago followed him into the yard, where she was shot from close range and died, police said.

On April 1, authorities arrested Daelin Trevon Wagner, 18, in Houston and Khari Jabari James, 17, in the Los Angeles area, police said. Warrants for their arrests were issued March 27 on counts of murder, robbery and conspiracy to commit robbery, according to court logs.

As of this afternoon, the teens were still awaiting extradition to Las Vegas.

The scheme to rob Sayago involved at least four people, and phone records helped detectives link Wagner and James to the plot, police said. No other suspects have been identified, police said.

Investigators, who also received information from an anonymous tipster, believe Wagner set up the deal but wasn’t present at the time of the shooting, police said.

They suspect James, who had kept in constant touch with Wagner about the time of the shooting and whose cell phone was picked up by a tower in the area, was there, according to the report. Police did not, however, identify the suspected shooter.

Surveillance images from homes in the area showed Sayago driving to the house, which was vacant, and meeting with two people who had been dropped off down the street before she arrived, police said. After the shooting, the pair left in a waiting car, police said.
