BYU football gains commitment from Liberty defensive back

Liberty Dominates Basic Sunrise

L.E. Baskow

Liberty’s Allan Mwata (22) cuts back on Basic defenders after an interception during the Sunrise regional high school football championship game on Friday, Nov. 18, 2016.

Allan Mwata, a class of 2018 defensive back from Liberty High in Las Vegas, verbally committed to BYU football today.

It’s not the first time BYU has secured a committed from a Liberty defender. Time will tell if Mwata pans out like the other — Kai Nacua, arguably Liberty’s best all-time player.

Nacua was a Jim Thorpe Award semifinalist last fall for BYU and finished his career with 14 interceptions — the most for a BYU player since the 1980s.

The 5-foot-11, 190-pound Mwata had 48 tackles and three interceptions in 2016 for Liberty, which won the Sunrise Regional championship and was ranked for most of the season in the national top-25.

Mwata also has a scholarship offer from Florida Atlantic.
