Senate Democrats push through family planning bill

CARSON CITY — Senate Democrats have pushed through a bill for the state to establish a family planning program that would allow distribution of contraceptives.

The bill sets up an account that would be administered by the state Division of Heath Care Financing and Policy to provide money to local governments and nonprofit agencies to carry out the program. There is no state money provided in the bill, and funds would come from grants, gifts and donations.

The money could be used for medical exams, treatment, genetic counseling and contraceptive devices.

Senate Bill 122, was approved 12-9.

The Senate also unanimously approved a bill to require employers with more than 15 workers to provide “reasonable accommodations” for workers who are pregnant or new mothers.

State Sen. Nicole Cannizzaro, D-Las Vegas, said accommdoations might including providing a stool to sit on or reasonable rest periods.

Both bills now go to the Assembly.
