Nevada plant will turn garbage into jet, diesel fuel

CARSON CITY — The state Board of Finance today approved issuing $140 million in bonds to help build a plant at the Tahoe-Reno Industrial Center that plans to turn garbage into jet and diesel fuel.

Fulcrum Sierra BioFuels will build and run the facility with a total cost estimated at $340 million.

It will take trash from a nearby landfill, refine it into sludge and ship it to California for final processing.

Gov. Brian Sandoval called it an “incredible project” that will “enhance our energy portfolio.”

Bruce Breslow, director of the state Department of Business and Industry, said the state would bear no responsibility to pay off the bonds if the project were to fail.

The company, based in Pleasanton, Calif., intends to hire 130 skilled employees who will earn an average of $25 an hour.

When completed the plant’s target is to turn 175,000 tons of garbage into 11 million gallons of jet fuel a year.
