State Capitol to open Saturdays for tourists

CARSON CITY — During the recession, the state Capitol was closed to tourists on weekends because of a lack of funding for security.

Now, the Capitol will be opened on Saturdays for visitors to tour and see its historic paintings and exhibits.

Mike Willden, chief of staff for Gov. Brian Sandoval, said the building will be open to the public from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays.

The offices of the governor, lieutenant governor, secretary of state, treasurer and controller will be closed.

The administration plans to monitor visitor volume to determine if spending the extra money is warranted.
