Letters to the Editor:

It’s a matter of health

Although the health care debate has attracted much of the focus on national politics, our environment here in Nevada is at risk of massive degradation.

Many people do not realize the effect that the environment has on their health. Clean air and water for Nevada are on the line — both of which directly affect our health. We cannot allow the health of our community to be jeopardized.

Time is of the essence. The congressional budget decision is right around the corner, and now it is more important than ever to let our local officials like Sen. Dean Heller, R-Nev., know that we care about the environment. If Nevadans do not voice their concerns, there will be a devastating 31 percent funding cut to the Environmental Protection Agency. A cut this substantial means jobs will be lost, environmental regulations will not be upheld and penalties for polluters will not be enforced.

Without clean air and water, the health care debate may be largely irrelevant.
