12 Days of Giving: Safe Nest

Editor’s Note: While ’tis the season of giving for most Nevadans, many local nonprofit groups give back to the Southern Nevada community year-round. The Las Vegas Sun is profiling some of those groups to inform the community how they can help.

Las Vegas ranks fifth in the nation for domestic violence incidents per capita and Nevada ranks third in the nation for domestic violence incidents per capita, according to Safe Nest’s CEO Liz Ortenburger.

Safe Nest formed 40 years ago, and is the longest-serving and largest non-profit in Southern Nevada specifically focused on combating domestic violence.

The group looks to the public for help by spreading the word about their hotline, becoming a citizen advocate, volunteering, or donating money or used household goods, which they give to victims or sell to help support themselves. To learn more.

“The best way for the community to help in the long run is for folks to stop asking why didn’t the victim leave, but why did the batterer abuse?” Ortenburger said.
