Mother, teenage son arrested in shooting death of former Chaparral student

The 17-year-old and his mother wanted in connection with the shooting death of former Chaparral High star athlete Richard Nelson were arrested today, according to Metro Police.

Tianna Thomas, 37, was booked into Clark County Detention Center where she faces one count of accessory to murder with a deadly weapon, police said. Her teenage son was taken to Clark County Juvenile Hall and faces one count of murder with a deadly weapon.

The shooting occurred Saturday night on the 4700 block of Sacks Drive, near East Tropicana Avenue and Boulder Highway, police said.

Nelson was attempting to break up a fight involving his older sister when he was shot multiple times, police said.

The shooter fled the scene in a vehicle before officers arrived, police said.

Thomas is being held on $5,000 bail and is scheduled for court on Thursday, according to the Clark County Detention Center website.
