Las Vegas Sun's Ray Brewer, Case Keefer and Jesse Granger preview Saturday's slate of big high school basketball games at the Big City Showdown, headlined by Findlay Prep vs. Bishop Gorman.

The Big City Showdown at the South Point Arena not only pits Southern Nevada’s best two basketball teams – Bishop Gorman and Findlay Prep – against each other, but it also provides a platform for other schools to display their talent.

That’s what Centennial High’s Troy Brown Jr. did Saturday afternoon, with a stat-stuffing performance to lead the Bulldogs to a 59-51 win against Coronado.

“It’s a great event to give some other schools some exposure,” Brown said. “The Gorman and Findlay game is always a great game with top players in the country, but just the fact that other schools get recognition I appreciate it coming from a public school.”

Brown tallied 25 points, 14 rebounds, five assists and three steals in the contest, leading Centennial in every stat category. He's an Oregon commit and McDonald's All-American.

“He’s a great team player for us, whether we need him to score a lot, run the offense or be an anchor on defense,” Centennial coach Noah Hartsock said. “He does it all for us, and he’s great at getting his teammates involved.”

Only one other Bulldog scored in double-figures — Alijah Henderson who 10 points on 4-of-12 shooting from the field.

Centennial never trailed. Coronado rallied to tie the game at 38-all in the third quarter, but Centennial pulled away for the win.

“We told the guys we were doing too much one-on-one and we needed more movement,” Hartsock said. “The guys responded well by sharing the ball and finishing through contact.”

Kennedy Koehler led Coronado with 26 points and five rebounds.

“Coronado is a great team that I think will make a lot of noise in the playoffs so it’s good to see how we stack up right now and try to just keep improving from here,” Hartsock said.

After a 20-point loss to Clark in December, Centennial’s spot amongst Southern Nevada’s elite was called into question. Saturday’s win over last year’s state runner-up answered those questions.

“It’s a great win for us,” Brown said. “It shows that we are developing and maturing a lot as the season goes on. To come out there and struggle and be able to overcome adversity it was great.”
