Michele Fiore speaks during a town hall meeting sponsored by the Southern Hills Republican Women’s Club at Buckman’s Grille in Henderson Tuesday, April 26, 2016.

Former Nevada Assemblywoman and gun rights advocate Michele Fiore said she filed today to run for Las Vegas City Council, citing the need for a voice “that is reflective of the values and principles” of residents in Ward 6.

Fiore will be vying for a seat left vacant by term-limited Mayor Pro Tempore Steve Ross, who has served on the council for the past 12 years. Her main challenger will likely be Ross’ wife, Kelli Ross.

“I am still very much in the fight to keep Nevada a great place to live, work and play,” Fiore said in an email to supporters announcing her filing.

Fiore represented Assembly District 4 in the Nevada Legislature from 2013 to 2016 and unsuccessfully ran for Nevada’s 3rd Congressional District seat last year.

She gained national attention for her outspoken views in favor of gun rights. She distributed a Christmas card in 2015 that showed her and seven family members posing with guns and a 2016 calendar in which she was photographed each month with a different weapon.

Fiore also traveled to Oregon last year during the occupation of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge by a group of protestors, including Nevada brothers Ryan and Ammon Bundy. With evangelist Franklin Graham, Fiore helped negotiate the peaceful surrender of the last four protestors at the refuge.
