Man faces arson count after mattress fire at Las Vegas motel

A homeless man was arrested early today on an arson count after police found him in a motel room with a burning mattress and a lighter in his hand, according to Las Vegas Fire & Rescue officials.

Nobody was injured, officials said.

Metro Police responding to a disturbance call just after midnight at the Fun City Motel at Las Vegas Boulevard and Sahara Avenue smelled smoke coming from a room and asked the occupant to open the door, fire department officials said.

When nobody answered, officers forced the door open and found the man standing next to the burning bed with the lighter in his hand, officials said. He was identified as James E. Williams, 27.

The officers pulled Williams outside, and one of them went back inside to make sure nobody else was in the room, officials said.

Firefighters arrived and quickly put out the fire. There was no damage to the motel room, officials said.

Las Vegas Fire & Rescue arson investigators arrested Williams on a count of first-degree arson, officials said. He was turned over to police for transport to the Clark County Detention Center, officials said.
