UNLV medical school to begin classes this summer

CARSON CITY — The first class of 60 students will begin instruction at UNLV’s new medical school on July 1, a legislative budget committee was told today.

The school has received 900 student applications, with 400 from Nevada or with ties to Nevada, school Dean Barbara Atkinson said. Of the first 14 students who have been accepted, five are Hispanic, two are black and one is native American.

The school has received $20 million in private donations and is looking for a donor to finance a major building for the school, Atkinson said.

The first class will be for primary care physicians, but Atkinson said the school must concentrate on turning out specialists to meet growing needs in Southern Nevada.
