Metro Police investigate an officer-involved shooting on Rancho Drive between Jones Boulevard and Craig Road Tuesday, July 11, 2017.

An officer who shot and killed a man who charged at him with a knife earlier this week was identified today as William Pollock, a 16-year veteran of the force, according to Metro Police.

The suspect, Caleb Edward Blaylock, 27, of Las Vegas, died at the scene from multiple gunshot wounds fired from close range, police said.

Pollock, 56, responded about 1:10 p.m. Tuesday to a pawnshop in the 4100 block of Rancho Drive, just south of Craig Road, to reports that a man with a knife had tried to attack a group of men and take a vehicle, police said.

The men got away after one of them hit Blaylock with a hammer, police said. They reported the incident to management at the pawnshop and left, police said.

Blaylock, who was walking north on Rancho, was pointed out to Pollock by a witness, police said. Pollock followed Blaylock, who ignored commands to stop and charged at the officer and tried to stab him as Pollock exited his cruiser, police said.

Pollock fired multiple rounds from “very close range,” police said. Blaylock died at the scene.

The incident was captured on Pollock’s body camera, images that were expected to be revealed this afternoon when Metro provides further details.

Investigators have spoken to the men Blaylock allegedly tried to attack before the shooting, police said.

Pollock was placed on routine, paid administrative leave while the investigation continues.
