Letter to the editor:

Trump’s actions indefensible

We should have been prepared for it. First, he decimated his Republican rivals with his childish name-calling, then he ridiculed anyone he could label elite.

It was the media, then Hollywood stars or commentators — anyone who criticized him. But then he was elected president and, not satisfied with winning, he began seeking retribution for their criticism.

Election to the presidency is not a mantel of total acclaim. Each president is subject to the examination and review of his actions. Even the CEO of a major corporation is held accountable to its board and stockholders and is subject to criticism when his or her actions impact the product or reputation of the company.

The presidency is a mantel of responsibility to the nation and the welfare of all its citizens.

Time and attention devoted to his Twitter account are reprehensible. His spokespeople defend his actions by praising his success in creating contact with the public via social media and bypassing the “fake media” that attacks him. Their explanations are as indefensible as his messages.

Whatever biases may be expressed in any media I value the opportunity I have as a literate, curious and concerned citizen to hear and see it all and make judgments for myself. I hope the president, with some sound advice, will be able to pursue the same course.
