Letters to the Editor:

Lands need protectors

Public lands need to remain public. That’s the purpose of our National Park Service and the value our national monuments bring.

Thousands of Nevadans and tourists visit these special places each year. They bring their families, they recognize the beauty in nature and they add to our economy with each visit. Some advocate for these special areas to be returned to our states for control, but the reality is that we don’t have the funds to support these magnificent lands. We would lose federal funds for firefighting and for general maintenance. The states would then be responsible for the cost. We are struggling in Nevada to fund education and health care. Which would we cut to take care of our public lands? Or would they be sold off to highest bidder for drilling and other development? Maybe that’s the real objective.

Get real. Urge our elected officials to save our public lands.
