Letters to the Editor:

Where is the compassion?

In reading a current report on the status of DACA I pondered as to whatever happened to compassion in America. There are 800,000 “Dreamer” children who were brought here by their undocumented parents, their language English, educated in American schools many of whom have achieved higher degrees, and have lived a peaceful life like all legal citizens.

President Barrack Obama initiated amnesty for that group which is now being questioned, to the point of pending law actions, by the attorney generals of ten states.

Given the fact that those courts handling the lawsuits have majority appointed Republican justices, as well as the final word in the Supreme Court, there is a real chance that these innocents who came here, not by their own decisions, could be deported.

Sending those individuals back to a country they do not know is not only, in my opinion, cruel but unconscionable. These educated “Dreamers” can and have made meaningful contributions to America, view themselves as Americans, and so why even think of treating them as aliens?

Is it a sign of our times that empathy is dead, or doing the right thing is passe even if it comes to our own human beings? There are many undocumented workers here in America that could be deported so why pick on the “Dreamers.” Republicans have gone astray, and their great past tradition has seemingly died replaced by mean spirited actions.
