Court orders hearing for man convicted in slaying when a teen

CARSON CITY — A Las Vegas man whose death sentence was reduced to life in prison is seeking to have his sentence further reduced. Michael Domingues was convicted in the robbery and slaying of a woman and her 4-year-old son.

The Nevada Supreme Court said Thursday that the District Court should consider further evidence in the youthful background of Domingues, who claimed he was abused and that his family was dysfunctional when he was growing up.

Domingues was found guilty of the 1993 strangulation of Arjin Pechpo and the stabbing death of her 4-year-old son during a robbery. He was 16 at the time and was sentenced to the death penalty at age 17.

The U.S. Supreme ruled in 2003 that the death penalty could not be imposed on juveniles. His sentence was then reduced to life without parole, plus 25 years.

Domingues maintains his sentence should be reduced further because his lawyer failed to present evidence about his troubled youth at his penalty hearing.
