Last leg of Carson City freeway to open Wednesday

CARSON CITY — The final leg of the freeway through Carson City will be opened to traffic Wednesday, a segment just over three miles long and costing $46 million to build.

With the completion of the segment, Interstate 580 will stretch from Reno to south of Carson City at the junction of U.S. 50 leading to South Lake Tahoe.

The Nevada Department of Transportation said the project will alleviate congestion in downtown Carson City. The full 10-mile stretch through Carson City was started in 2000 but was delayed because of a lack of funding. The state and federal government shared the full $200 million cost of the freeway.
