Two people were killed and one critically wounded this morning in a shooting inside a rental car, according to Metro Police.

The shooting happened about 3:30 a.m. in an alley at an apartment complex on Silver Dollar Avenue, near Penwood Avenue and Arville Street, police said.

Inside the car, which rolled forward into a utility pole after the gunfire, officers found the bodies of the female driver and a man, Lt. Dan McGrath said. A second man, who was shot in the face, was taken to University Medical Center in critical condition, police said.

The victims were in the car when the gunman, who was seated behind the driver, opened fire, striking the other back-seat passenger first, then the driver and front-seat passenger, McGrath said. At least five rounds were fired, he said.

It appeared the woman tried to get out of the car after she was shot, based on a trail of blood found at the scene, McGrath said.

A man who might have been the shooter was seen running through the apartment complex after the shooting, McGrath said. Investigators were working to identify the victims, he said.

No other weapons were found in the car, and any theories on a motive would be speculation at this point, McGrath said.

In the past six months, there have been several shootings in the area, McGrath said. One of them was the slaying of Lorenzo Hardison, 18, who died a day after he was shot in the face on Feb. 15. The suspect in that case, Ericka Winn, 25, turned herself in three days later, police said.

According to police, Hardison, Winn and several other people were at a small gathering when a fight broke out before the shooting.
