An officer shot at a burglary suspect in the southwest valley early today before a neighbor hit the suspect in the head with a baseball bat and stopped him, according to Metro Police.
Officers were dispatched about 12:45 a.m. to the 9800 block of River Trader Street, near Buffalo Drive and Mountains Edge Parkway.
A resident called 911 when the suspect, possibly a juvenile, was caught on home surveillance cameras trying to break into the house, McMahill said. Investigators believe he had just burglarized a vacant house nearby.
Police spotted the suspect running through backyards and at some point during the chase, an officer fired a shot when the suspect peeked over a wall and brandish a gun, McMahill said. The shot missed.
A neighbor with a baseball bat subsequently hit the suspect, McMahill said. No details were released about that encounter.
The suspect, whose name was not released, was arrested in a nearby desert area and taken to University Medical Center in stable condition, McMahill said. Investigators recovered a shotgun nearby, police said.
The shooting, the third involving a Metro officer this year, remains under investigation.
