Taxable sales in Nevada up 11.8 percent in January

CARSON CITY — Business was strong in Nevada in January.

The state Department of Taxation reported Thursday that taxable sales rose 11.8 percent in January compared to the same month in 2016.

There were increases of 32.5 percent in sale of durable goods and 30.3 percent in construction materials.

Total taxable sales reached $4.2 billion. Eleven of Nevada’s 17 counties showed increases.

Clark County posted sales of $3.1 billion, a gain of 10.4 percent. Sales in Washoe County increased by 5.5 percent. The biggest decrease was 23.1 percent in Esmeralda County.

The department said results in Clark County showed a 36.5 percent gain in sales at electronic stores; 20.5 percent in furniture sales and 19.1 percent in building materials.

Sales at restaurants and bars in Clark County rose 5.3 percent and clothing sales inched up 1.1 percent.

The state received $85 million in taxes from these statewide sales, up 10 percent.
