Updated Wednesday, May 3, 2017 | 3:49 p.m.

The Las Vegas City Council today named Deputy City Manager Scott Adams as the next city manager.

Adams, whose first day as city manager will be July 7, is taking over for Betsy Fretwell, who is retiring and taking a job with the data company Switch.

Adams, who has been with the city for nearly 13 years, was selected from five internal candidates. He oversees the departments of Economic and Urban Development, Community Services, Cultural Affairs and Parks and Recreation.

He previously served as the chief urban redevelopment officer and director of the Office of Business Development for five years. He continues to serve as the operations officer for the Las Vegas Redevelopment Agency.

Adams is a 1977 urban planning graduate of Michigan State University. Before joining the city of Las Vegas, Adams held numerous positions in the field of urban economic development.

After 17 years with the city, Fretwell is joining Switch as senior vice president of Switch SMART, the company’s smart city division.

"I’ve been working with (Scott) for over a decade now," Fretwell said. "I know he’ll do very well in this job. I look forward to him leaving his imprint on the city and taking it to the next level."
