Sun Editorial:

Democrats’ post-vote taunting was not a good look

House Democrats had every reason to be disdainful of the version of the American Health Care Act that their Republican colleagues passed on Thursday. It’s a bad piece of legislation, and it was passed without nearly enough examination of its consequences.

But in jeering the GOP after the vote by singing “Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye” afterward, the Democrats acted shamefully.

The issue at hand couldn’t have been more serious, as the House’s AHCA threatens to leave millions of Americans with inadequate health care coverage — including children, the elderly and many of the most vulnerable people in our society. For the Democrats to turn it into a political issue and not respect the gravity and substance of the issue — their taunts were meant to suggest that Republicans would lose their seats amid backlash from voters who didn’t want to see Obamacare repealed — was an undignified display that wasn’t worthy of the chamber.

It was an example of why Congress is held in such low esteem. Too often, as in this instance, congressional delegates show that they’re more motivated by scoring points and one-upping the other party than doing what’s right for their constituents.

What matters with the AHCA and Obamacare isn’t political power or the results of any election, it’s the health and welfare of the American people.

Members of Congress should remember that, and keep their singing confined to the shower.
