Man shot after pointing gun toward officers, Metro Police say

A Metro Police officer shot and critically wounded a man who raised a gun at officers responding to a family disturbance call early today at an apartment complex in the west valley, authorities said.

Officers responded about 1 a.m. to the 9500 block of West Tropicana Avenue, where a woman reported that her intoxicated ex-husband was threatening her children, police said. They found the man outside the apartment with a gun in his hand, police said.

Over about four or five minutes, officers ordered the man to drop the gun, but he refused to comply, police said. When he raised the gun in the direction of the officers, one of them fired, hitting the man in the chest, police said.

The man was taken to University Medical Center, where he was in critical condition, police said.

A gun was recovered at the scene, police said.

It was Metro’s sixth officer-involved shooting this year. The identify of the officer involved in the shooting will be released after 48 hours, per department policy.
